CAPP is designed to help students succeed in school and move on to a rewarding career.

Before you can sign your Student Agreement each semester, you must complete the required steps on the CAPP pyramid for your credit hour range.

The Student Transition Program is a series of on-line modules where you will be introduced to the Metropolitan College Student Development Team as they guide you through the information and resources needed to help you succeed as a Metropolitan College participant.

Review DISCOVER Results

Locate your DISCOVER ID on the MyMC page to log back in to your account on Discover to further investigate the results of the inventories that you took during the STP. Look at various career options, salary ranges, and the occupational outlook for careers that meet your interests, skills, and values. Contact a Student Development Counselor for additional assistance in understanding these results.

Develop Academic & Career Goals

Developing short and long range academic and career goals will assist you in meeting degree requirements, choosing a major and/or career path, and in establishing a plan for graduation and beyond. Make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T. - Smart, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Tangible. You and a Student Development Counselor will also discuss your goals while completing your Career Action Plan during the Resume requirement.

Explore, Choose & Declare a Major

Now is the time to begin exploring possible majors. Maybe conduct informational interviews with those already in your chosen career field or visit the Occupational Outlook Handbook for more information. Be sure to speak with your academic advisor about the requirements for those majors you're considering. UofL students should speak with their academic advisor to learn the official procedures of declaring a major and JCTC students must declare their major with the Advising Center.

Meet with an Academic Advisor

You and your academic advisor will form an educational partnership to help obtain your educational and career goals. Your advisor can help you make decisions about your college experience, help you investigate degree programs and careers, and be of assistance to you if you experience academic difficulty. By helping you complete an Academic Program Plan JCTC academic advisors are available to assist you with planning a course of study and selecting a career path that meets your needs and skills.

Meet with an ULtra Advisor or JCTC Transfer Advisor

For those students looking to transfer to the University of Louisville, The University of Louisville Transfer Program (ULtra) provides support and assistance for JCTC students who plan to continue their education at UofL. ULtra provides support before, during, and after the transfer process for a smooth transition and degree completion at UofL. If students are looking to transfer to other institutions besides UofL, then the JCTC transfer advisors are available to provide guidance and point you in the right direction. Students can contact the JCTC transfer advisors at jf-advising-center@kctcs.edu or 213-2277.

Attend Transfer Event

What better way to learn more about the University of Louisville than to attend transfer events sponsored by ULtra? ULtra hosts "Transfer Days" right on the JCTC campuses which allows JCTC students the opportunity to meet with UofL advisors and staff from various academic programs.

Familiarize Yourself with Campus Resources

Whether you need someone to talk to about personal problems, want to discover how to earn credit through service learning, get involved with a Greek organization, take Honors classes, or get help filling out your FAFSA, campus resources are available to help. Find out where and how to get the 411 about these resources and more on UofL's campus resources page or JCTC's current students page. If you're a JCTC MC student, don't forget to obtain your MC sticker from a Student Development Counselor to provide you access to UofL resources.

Get Involved on Campus

A huge part of a college education doesn't take place in the classroom. It happens outside of class when you participate in campus organizations, activities, and projects. This is also an opportunity to develop skills that employers are looking for in potential job candidates. Find out how to become involved in the political organization of your choice, theatre groups, major clubs, cultural diversity or interfaith organizations, single parent support groups, or Common Ground. Develop a Resume and Career Portfolio*

You will need a resume early on in your educational career for co-ops, internships, promotion opportunities, graduate school, etc. The resume is tailored to your chosen career field and highlights your skills and experiences in a concise manner to get you an interview with potential employers. Before visiting the CREW Center, you are required to:

  1. View the Resume Information Sheet (pdf) (MyMC Login Required)
  2. Print the Resume Packet
  3. Bring in your completed packet to the CREW Center and allow at least 2 hours to complete your resume and upload to your MC Career Portfolio. The MC Career Portfolio is not accessible by employers and provides a location for MC participants to store documents important to clarifying and achieving career goals (i.e. resume, career plan, mock interview feedback, helpful resources, etc.) Locations and office hours.

A career action plan is like a road map, so you can plan what path you need to take to achieve your career goals. Ask yourself: what career am I interested in pursuing? What barriers do I have to achieve my career goals? What action am I taking RIGHT now to achieve my desired career goals? Remind them of the Career Action Plan we discussed with them during Resume requirement.

Take on a Campus or Employment Leadership Position

Taking on a leadership position in a campus organization can provide you with valuable experiences that can enhance your candidacy. While it's important to get involved on campus, you should also seek out ways to increase your responsibilities in those organizations.

Informational interviews or job shadowing are effective tools students can use over and over to "try on" careers. Schedule an informational interview or job shadowing opportunity with someone in a career that interests you. How does it fit?

Not only are you able to spend quality time with professionals in your chosen field, but the credit hours you earn may be used in your degree program. Check with your academic advisor to see if your program requires an internship or co-op.

Complete Career and Academic Survey and Update MC Career Portfolio (CAPP Requirement)

All Students must complete the on-line Career and Academic survey as part of the CAPP requirements. The Metropolitan College Student Development Counselors may correspond with students based upon the answers given in this survey on various topics. The survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete. This is also a good time to update your MC Career Portfolio with a working draft of your resume, related class projects or any awards you may have received. Based on your career goals, you may want to create a public on-line career portfolio (pdf). A public on-line career portfolio will provide employers access to examples of your work relevant to your career goals (i.e. writing samples, photographs, etc.)

Explore Post-Graduate Options

Unsure about graduate school? Do you need a graduate degree for your chosen profession? Would it help advance your career? If you are having difficulty answering these questions now is the time to talk with your academic/faculty advisors or a Student Development Counselor about your choices after graduation. Maybe pursuing a graduate degree makes sense for you or your chosen career path. You can also revisit the DISCOVER career assessment to learn more about degree programs and related career paths.

Take Graduate/Professional Exams

If you are considering applying for graduate school it's a good idea to sign up for the professional exam required by your field of study. For graduate business programs, the GMAT will be required. For law school, take the LSAT. For programs in Arts and Sciences (Psychology, English, History, etc.) or Education, take the GRE. The REACH Center at UofL can provide tutoring for your exam.

Complete Mock Interview*

All students must complete a mock interview with the CREW Career Center as part of the CAPP requirements during the 60–89 credit hour block. The mock interview prepares you for your job search and long-term professional development. All interviews will take place at Metropolitan College offices on UofL and JCTC campuses.

To schedule your mock interview go to the MyMC page and select the Mock Interview icon and follow the instructions. Mock interviews are scheduled one week in advance, so please sign-up as early as possible.

Prior to your Mock Interview appointment, students are encouraged to review the Mock Interview Info Sheet (pdf) (MyMC Login Required) and the Mock Interview Packet [pdf] to learn preparation tips.

Identify Your Career Focus

Identify your next career move. If you have been examining multiple career paths, now is the time to narrow down the choices and focus on one or two careers. Conduct detailed career research and gather information on the careers that most interest you.

Complete an Internship or Co-op

Attend Career Fairs

Career Fairs are a good place to meet with a variety of employers, even some you may not have thought of. Remember to dress for an interview and take plenty of copies of your resume. You may have an interview on the spot. Make the most out of your career fair experience by preparing for the experience.

You've worked hard and graduation is around the corner! Be aware of posted deadlines and procedures to ensure you'll be able to graduate when the time comes.

Career and Academic Planning Program (CAPP)

Welcome to the Metropolitan College Career and Academic Planning Program (CAPP). The Student Development Team of Metropolitan College is dedicated to promoting the academic success of our students. We have created CAPP to collaborate with students in order to:

  • clarify career and life goals,
  • develop meaningful academic plans, and
  • optimize academic potential.

All new students entering Metropolitan College will have to complete the CAPP program. All new students are required to work their way up the pyramid completing all the CAPP blocks before being allowed to sign a Student Agreement at their current block.
