Humana: Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ pertains to students working at Humana who participate in the Metropolitan College/Humana Higher Education program. Students who participate in other programs or who work for other employers should consult the general FAQ.

Q. Who is eligible for this program?

  • Current Humana associates
  • Students already accepted or enrolled at UofL or JCTC for an undergraduate degree or students planning to enroll within 6 months.

Q. What positions are eligible for this program?

At this time, positions are limited to the Medicare Customer Care Representative role and Medicare Enrollment Specialist role.

Q. How many positions are available at this time? When do you hire for these positions.

All of Humana hiring practices and criteria will be followed to fill these positions. In the past, we've hired for these roles in the summer with a start date of August or September. We continually collect information from people interested in the program via the Interest Form located on the Humana Higher Education Webpage.

Q. How do I find out about open positions in this program?

Because our recruiting for this program tends to happen only once or twice a year, the best way to be kept informed of current or upcoming openings in the program is by filling out the Interest Form on our Humana Higher Education Webpage. We'll then email you when positions are open.

Q. What are the requirements to be in this program?

  • You must be accepted or enrolled at UofL or JCTC.
  • You must apply for financial aid.
  • You must achieve a "C" or better in order to receive payment for each class.
  • When entering the program, you will work full time during the 6-8 week training session. Training will generally take place from 8-5 Monday thru Friday during this 6-8 week period.
  • You will work full time through open enrollment season (During the Fall Semester- approximately September through the end of December) and will work part time the rest of the year (Spring and Summer Semesters- approximately January- August)
  • You must sign an agreement with Humana to remain employed and in good standing through the semester and approximately one month after the end of the semester. This agreement must be signed each semester in order to participate in the program.
  • You must follow all of Humana's existing policies and procedures, including attendance expectations.

Q. What are the hours for these positions?

You will work full time during the fall semester to accommodate Open Enrollment period. Then you will work part time during the spring and summer semesters, allowing you more time to focus on school. Positions within the Enrollment Specialist role generally work schedules between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. In the Customer Care Specialist area, schedules are available between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. During the Open Enrollment season (Fall Semester), associates in this program may also be required to work up to 12 hours a week in mandatory overtime. You will work with your individual manager to plan a work schedule that fits with your class schedule.

Q. How is this program different from Humana's Tuition Assistance Program?

  • The Humana Higher Education Program allows you to earn your degree faster by supporting a flexible schedule. You're able to attend school and get real-world work experience at the same time.
  • The program pays more of your tuition than Humana's Tuition Assistance Program.
  • Humana Higher Education Program is a partnership through which Humana will pay the tuition directly to the school. You do not pay any money out of pocket for tuition.

Q. Can I be a part of this program and use Humana's Tuition Assistance Program?

No, the programs are mutually exclusive.

Q. If I have a scholarship or financial aid money already, am I eligible?

Yes, any scholarship money may be returned to you if it is in excess of what is needed for tuition. This money can then be used for books, housing, or other expenses. Loan money, scholarships or any other financial aid in an amount equal to the semester charges owed may be held in your account until after the contract period ends and Humana has paid your tuition to the school. After payments have been made, the amount held will be refunded by the educational institution to the student minus any money due to the institution above and beyond the amount Humana will pay.

Q. What happens to my benefits while I am in the Humana Higher Education Program?

You will be considered a part-time associate for the entire year for benefit purposes, and will receive Humana's Standard Part-Time Benefits package. This means you will be eligible for the same medical and dental plans, but the rates you pay will be higher than that of a full time associate. Part-time associates earn a prorated amount of vacation hours bi-weekly. You will not be eligible for Short-Term Income Protection, Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, or Basic Life Insurance. Part-time associates are eligible for Voluntary Term Life Insurance, Long-Term Care Insurance, and Humana's Travel Accident Insurance.

Q. Will Humana Higher Education Program pay for books or housing?

No, financial aid or scholarships can help with those expenses.

Q. Can I take Learn Anytime or Web-based classes?

Yes, Humana will pay for Learn Anytime or Web classes offered through UofL or JCTC as long as the grade requirement is met. Contact a Student Development Counselor for additional information about signing a contract for Learn Anytime coursework.

Q. What if I want to take a semester off?

You can sit out a semester from school and remain employed at Humana. Benefits and standing as a part-time associate will not change during this time.
